Water Leaking from AC Unit: 7 Causes and How to Fix It
A small drip from the outdoor condenser drain on a humid day is normal. Water pooling near your indoor air handler, dripping from the ceiling, or leaking when the AC is off — is not. DIY Fix: Clearing a Condensate Drain Clog
Your AC removes humidity from the air. That moisture drips off the evaporator coil into a drain pan, then exits through a 3/4-inch PVC line. Algae, mold, and dust build up in that line. When it clogs, water backs up and overflows. Tools needed: wet/dry shop vacuum, distilled white vinegar, rags, flashlight.
- Turn off the AC at the thermostat and breaker.
- Check the drain pan under the air handler for standing water. Absorb or vacuum it out.
- Find the condensate drain line — 3/4-inch white PVC pipe exiting the air handler.
- At the outdoor exit, press a wet/dry vacuum hose against the opening with a rag seal. Run for 1–2 minutes.
- If slimy material is pulled out, clog is cleared. Pour 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar into the indoor cleanout port.
- Wait 30 minutes, flush with clean water.
- Restore power and run 15 minutes. Verify outdoor drain end is dripping.
Prevention: Pour 1/4 cup of distilled white vinegar monthly during cooling season. Change filter every 1–3 months.
Goodman and Daikin Drain Pan Recall
